Essential Elements of a Modern Farmhouse

We are currently working our way through the beginning stages of designing and building our modern farmhouse on 9 acres on the edge of town. The property has no utilities (water, electric or sewer) so we have been busy coordinating with the city and making sure we know all the "rules" before we move forward. We don't want to back-track during this process to re-do anything. As we have finalized some of these plans, we are now ready to begin considering some of the design elements that will make it a modern-farmhouse home.

Here are my Top 7 Essential Elements of a Modern Farmhouse

1. White Exterior

It's not an absolute must that 100% of the exterior be white, but you will find that most farmhouse style homes are mostly white. You can add a modern or rustic touch by adding natural wood accents like doors, posts, shutters or gables.

2. Soft or Muted Colors

Just like with the exterior paint usually being white; you'll usually find the inside of a farmhouse is lighter and softer colors. Soft blues, grays and greens give a more modern feel when they are paired with white accents. Another modern twist is to use the muted tones on your front door.... ;-)

3. Windows, Windows, Windows

A great farmhouse has lots and lots of large windows with grilles to maximize natural sunlight. The modern farmhouse usually groups 3 of these windows together for the ultimate view.

Isn't this nighttime view of all those windows amazing?!

4. Large Cover Porch

Oh goodness. The list can basically just stop here for me. I LOVE a large covered front (or back) porch. A large front porch may be the exact and only reason why my heart swoons when I see a farm house... but I digress.

Any size covered porch, big or small, makes for great curb-appeal. I personally love a wrap around porch. I suggest adding rocking chairs and comfy pillows for charm charm and personality, but that's just me.

5. Barn Style Lighting

If you did a Google search for "Barn Style Lighting" right now, your results would show image after image of industrial style, metal light fixtures with Edison light bulbs in varying shades of black, gray, bronze or galvanized metal. Like this, this or this.

6. Barn Style Garage Doors (Carriage Style)

Carriage style carriage doors give the appearance of barn doors that swing open. Most of these doors have a natural wood grain texture that can be stained natural wood coloring or painted to match the rest of the house.

7. Gable Shaped Roof

The shape of the roof line is a big, pricey item to change if you're trying to remodel and you're goal is farmhouse style (sorry). But if you're in the market for new construction, consider a gable shaped roof (or A shaped). You won't be sorry!

So there they are... 7 elements of a modern farmhouse.

I hope you found this list helpful and can implement a few easy changes into your home to give it a modern farmhouse feel.

We would love to have you follow along with us on our journey to our modern farmhouse.
